FRSC boss escaped death planned by driver

Mr Hyginus Omeje, the Sector Commander, Federal
Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Command, has
warned the personnel of the Corps to be safety
conscious by not stopping erring motorists by force.
Omeje told newsmen on Sunday that he was nearly killed
by a commercial driver who faced him with his vehicle in
an attempt to escape.
The commander said that the incident happened last
march when he tried to stop a driver who was driving an
overloaded commercial bus along Costain Area of the
state.
“I sighted the commercial bus on Eko Bridge loaded with
goods and passengers.
“Its state was dangerous to over road users that I could
not over look it. I asked one of my officers to snap the
vehicle while on motion.
“We decided to drive down to Costain Bus stop where we
knew it would be safe for him to stop without causing
traffic obstructions or endangering other people’s lives.
FRSC officials
“When I disembarked from my official car in company
with my orderly, I flagged the driver down for him to
stop, but he refused.
“Rather, he faced me with the vehicle in an attempt to
run over me; I was nearly killed by the driver.
“He later resorted to dangerous driving and I had to put a
phone call through to the Rapid Respond Squad (RRS)
team to join us in following him,’’ he said.
According to Omeje, it took the combined efforts of two
teams of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) along Nigerian
Breweries and Orile areas before they could stop him.
The commander said that after the driver was stopped
by the RRS officials, they requested for his driver’s
licence and vehicle particulars but he refused to produce
them.
Omeje said that the case has been transferred to the
Iponri Police Station for investigation and prosecution.
The FRSC boss, however, warned the officials to always
copy the number plates of erring motorists rather than
standing on the expressway to stop them by force.
According to him, such vehicles would be traced through
its number plates anywhere within the country.

Jose Mourinho explains who his one-finger celebration was aimed at

Jose Mourinho certainly didn’t hide his emotions after winning the Europa League with Manchester United. After his side triumphed over Ajax 2-0, the Portuguese boss celebrated wildly. Mourinho was seen embracing his son, whilst telling all of his players to hold up three fingers to signify their fairly underwhelming ‘treble’ of the Community Shield, EFL Cup and now the Europa League. But there was one action that nobody could quite understand. Immediately after the final whistle, Mourinho could be seen shaking his index finger rather passionately at the crowd. But what did it mean? Did he mean this was the first major trophy of his spell at United? Did it mean that he was still the Special One? Or was it a message to the victims of the Manchester attacks on Monday? Well, none of the above, actually. Mourinho has actually revealed exactly who his one-finger celebration was aimed at. Mourinho explains his celebration "It's for my family," Mourinho sa...

Awaiting the death and burial of recession

Judging by how confident the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr Godwin Emefiele was as he made the announcement, we can only but agree that, all things being equal – like economists the world over always posit – Nigeria will be out of recession latest by the third quarter of this year. According to his well-heeled argument, there was nowhere else for the nation’s beleaguered economy to head on account of the abiding positive indicators but out of recession. Who indeed would doubt him with inflation trending downwards, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) improving and foreign exchange going to the real sector as and when needed? What is more! This optimism is no less supported by the recent release of the nation’s economic position by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). According to the release, though the nation’s GDP contracted by 0.52 per cent in the 1st Quarter of 2017 representing the fifth consecutive quarter of contraction since the first quarter...
